Farmers desiring to learn how to improve pasture yields and soil quality are invited to a grazing workshop Sept. 6-7 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
Ben Bartlett, recently retired dairy and livestock agent from Michigan State University Extension, will share his expertise in designing grazing lands and becoming more efficient with animals and pastures. “This is for people who want to get their hands dirty,” said Jan Rowell, workshop coordinator and an assistant research professor for the School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences.
“This is really for the nuts and bolts of getting started, putting theory to practice from drafting a realistic management plan based on real farm logistics,” Rowell said. “Do you have enough feed, landscape, pastures, water, fencing? What are you labor and budgetary limitations?”
While the workshop will focus on muskoxen at the Robert G. White Large Animal Research Station, the lessons will be useful for raising all grazing animals. Low stress animal handling will also be emphasized.
The sessions are Sept. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m. and Sept. 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $30 and group size is limited.
The workshop is hosted by the UAF School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences and the UAF Animal Resources Center and funded by the USDA.
