New course focuses on sustainable livelihoods

"Sustainable Livelihoods and Community Well-Being," is a new course offered by SNRAS for fall semester.

Taught by Craig Gerlach and Phil Loring, the class is designed for natural resources management and geography students. "We will be looking at food, water, agriculture and food production, heath, climate and weather changes, community development, and linkages at all scales, from global to local, local to regional," Dr. Gerlach said.

Though it is listed at the graduate level, upper division undergraduates are welcome too. Part of the course will deal with designed systems so as to be more sustainable, more effectively responsive to change, with change including social, socioeconomic, cultural, political, ecological and climate change over the next 20 to 50 years.

Students will review the basic principles that govern the sustainability of systems and look at the cultural practices and individual behaviors that enhance or degrade sustainable livelihoods and community well-being.

The three-credit course is offered Mondays from 1 to 4 p.m. Contact Gerlach or call 474-6752 for more information.
