The SNRAS program, Scenarios Network for Alaska and Arctic Planning, welcomes a new research assistant professor, Keith Cunningham (pictured at left).
He holds a PhD from the University of Kansas and his research interest is remote sensing using light detection and ranging (LiDAR) and synthetic aperture radar (SAR). He teaches for the UA Geography Program courses such as Introduction to Remote Sensing, LiDAR and its Geospatial Applications, Digital Cartography and Geovisualization and Digital Elevation Modeling.
Dr. Cunningham said: "I have several projects underway right now. For the Department of Energy, I am building a GIS to calculate how much electricity we can generate if we put in-stream hydrokinetic turbines in every river of the lower 48. At Poker Flat Research Range, I work with their unmanned aerial systems which includes mapping Steller Sea Lion haul-outs as well as on wildfire/volcanic ash/aerosol in-situ sampling. My personal research interest is biomass estimation using LiDAR and SAR."
