In celebration of Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 13-19), Fairbanks will host the 2nd annual GeoFest, a free, fun and educational family event on Saturday, Nov. 19 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the UAF Wood Center. Geography Awareness Week is an annual celebration enacted by Congress in 1987 that invites families and schools to engage in experiences that draw attention to geo-literacy and the importance of geography education.
GeoFest will reflect the theme, “Geography: The Adventure in Your Community,” with participation from local entities, all featuring hands-on activities, along with contests and prizes.
Iditarod and Yukon Quest champion Lance Mackey will present a storytelling session at 1 p.m. Attendees will also learn about reindeer, aerial photo plotting and railroad artifacts. The Georgeson Botanical Garden staff will help children make pinecone bird feeders and budding artists will help paint a large mural. The Bureau of Land Management will have a wheel of fortune and there will be various mapping and GIS activities, as well as a treasure hunt.
The event is sponsored by the UA Geography Program, based at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and is funded in part by the National Geographic Society Education Foundation.
Gov. Sean Parnell has issued a proclamation declaring Nov. 13-19 Geography Awareness Week throughout Alaska.
