Juneau to celebrate Geography Awareness Week

In celebration of Geography Awareness Week (Nov. 13-19), Juneau will host its first GeoFest, a free, fun and educational family event on Saturday, Nov. 12 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. Geography Awareness Week is an annual celebration enacted by Congress in 1987 that invites families and schools to engage in fun, educational experiences that draw attention to geo-literacy and the importance of geography education.

GeoFest event will reflect the theme, “Geography: The Adventure in Your Community,” with participation from local entities, such as the Alaska Coastal Rainforest Center, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Discovery Southeast, National Park Service, Thunder Mountain High School, USDA Forest Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the University of Alaska Southeast. Hands-on activities and contests will occur at GeoFest, with prizes to be awarded.

The event is sponsored by the UA Geography Program, based at UAF's School of Natural Resources and Agricultural Sciences, along with the Geography Department at the University of Alaska Southeast, and is funded in part by the National Geographic Society Education Foundation.

Gov. Sean Parnell has issued a proclamation declaring Nov. 13-19 Geography Awareness Week throughout Alaska. The proclamation will be on display at the event.
