Field trip focused on soil geography

Professor Chien-Lu Ping and Research Associate Gray Michaelson conducted another successful field trip class, July 2-12. The Summer Sessions course is titled "Alaska Soil Geography Field Study: Soils Affected by Permafrost."

The 12 participants in the class studied permafrost landscape and soils affected by permafrost from the Fairbanks area to Prudhoe Bay along the Dalton Highway on 25 stops.

The participants included undergraduate and graduate students from UAF, Virginia, Canada and Sweden, scientists from the Argonne National Lab and Bureau of Land Management. The class visited the Fox Permafrost Tunnel guided by Professor Yuri Shur to see ice wedge from below ground, then on their trip north they saw the ice wedge from the ground surface. The class camped out at BLM Marion Creek and Galbraith Lake campgrounds and also stayed at the Toolik Field Station.
