Calypso Farm and Ecology Center had a surprise appearance of the New Old Time Chatauqua Circus Sunday during their open house.

Attendees were surprised to get a free taste of the traveling circus show but the real mission Sunday was for visitors to explore the farm, learning about the plants and animals, trying out natural dyeing, tasting fresh food and observing how weavers spin wool. There were games for the children, along with a scavenger hunt and nature walks.

Calypso is on to its next endeavor Saturday, July 30 with the EATinG Celebration at 5 p.m. at West Valley High School auditorium. The goal is to celebrate the students of the Fairbanks School Garden initiative, Calypso's summer garden program for teens.

Attendees will get to try garden-grown food prepared by students and local restaurants, including Julia's Solstice Cafe, the Pump House and L'Assiette de Pomegranate. A multimedia presentation will showcase six neighborhood gardens.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students with ID and $25 family passes. Tickets are available at Gulliver’s Books, Homegrown Market, all Calypso Farm School Garden farm stands and at the door.
