Kids will learn about compasses and GPS technology during Geoventure Day at Denali Education Center on Friday.
Katie Kennedy (pictured at right), who works with the University of Alaska Geography Program, explained it all to me when I ran into her in Nenana the other day.
“Participants will learn how to use a compass and topographic map to find their way, how to triangulate, and the difference between true north and magnetic north,” she said.
They’ll also learn how Global Positioning System technology works while playing games with GPS units.
Students enrolled in the program will upload GPS data onto Google Earth and learn how to share it with others.
“We’ll even create our own geocache and upload it onto the geocaching.com website, for others to enjoy,” Kennedy said.
This is part of Denali Education Center’s Days of Discovery and is open to ages 8-13. There is a fee.
